The Abilities India Expo in Kochi features innovative products, services, and works created by people with disabilities, promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities.
Kochi: The first-ever comprehensive national exhibition showcasing products and services for persons with disabilities, along with products crafted by them, Abilities India Expo, has commenced at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Kochi. Renowned artists Sunitha Thrippanikara, who paints using her mouth, and Swapna Augustine, who paints with her feet, inaugurated the event by writing the expo’s name.
Dr. P. T. Baburajan, the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, and Loknath Behera IPS, Managing Director of Kochi Metro Rail, were the chief guests. Dr. Baburajan emphasized that this expo not only highlights the equal rights, privileges, and opportunities available to persons with disabilities but also serves as a platform to ensure justice and inclusivity. He added that the event proves that disabilities do not define limitations and that the stalls at the expo serve as an inspiration for all.
The exhibition features a wide range of innovative products and services, including self-operated backrests for bedridden patients by C Care Bed Recliner, self-propelled wheelchairs by Megara Robotics for Humanity, and eye-tracking communication devices for those with speech impairments.
Additionally, the expo showcases products developed by visually impaired entrepreneur Geetha Saleesh under her brand Geetha’s Home to Home, such as Kurku Meal, turmeric powder, and First Drink. Other highlights include handmade products from Bethlehem Abhayabhavan, cognitive applications aiding individuals with mental health challenges, brain-exercise tools from Coexin, and a variety of products by Thrissur Vibhinna Vaibhava Vikasana Vedi.
A standout attraction is a modified auto-rickshaw designed for individuals with lower-limb disabilities, developed by Lijumon Philip of Startek Engineering. Lijumon mentioned that five such auto-rickshaws are already operating in Kochi using his specially designed Auto Handle system.
The expo also features the works of differently-abled artist M. R. Ratheesh, including portraits and pencil drawings. Assistive devices for persons with disabilities are available at significantly reduced prices at the event.
Abilities India Expo is organized by Volshal Abilities & Assistive Technologies and will run until February 2. The exhibition is open daily from 11 AM to 9 PM.
