In a remarkable display of courage, health workers in Palakkad navigated a dangerous forest path, amidst elephants and wild boars, to rescue a mother and her newborn.

Palakkad: On Christmas night, a remarkable rescue operation unfolded in Palakkad’s Kaikatti region as health workers bravely saved a mother and her newborn after she unexpectedly delivered her baby while traveling through a forest. The mother, Sampai (20), a guest worker from Seetharkund in Palakkad, had been on her way to the Nelliyampathy Primary Health Centre when she went into labor in the forest.

Sampai’s husband, Sujay Sardar, alerted the health workers about the situation, and a quick response team consisting of Junior Public Health Nurse Sudina, Nursing Assistant Janaki, and pharmacist Midilaj rushed to prepare the hospital for the delivery. Despite their efforts, Sampai delivered the baby before they could reach the hospital, as they struggled through a challenging forest road.

The health team promptly assisted the mother and newborn in a jeep, stabilizing her condition by following the doctor’s instructions. However, the journey to safety was far from simple. As they made their way through the forest, an elephant blocked their path, and a wild boar added further obstacles, forcing the team to halt.

After seeking help from the Forest Deputy Ranger, the rescue team spent nearly two hours stuck between wild animals, providing the necessary care to Sampai to prevent excessive blood loss and ensure the newborn’s safety. The team continued to monitor the mother, assisting with breastfeeding and managing her health.

Finally, with the help of the forest authorities, the team managed to safely navigate the wild animals and transport Sampai and her newborn to the Nenmara Community Health Centre, where they received further medical attention. Following the check-up and stabilization, the mother and child were then transferred to the Palakkad Women’s and Children’s Hospital for advanced care.

Health Minister Veena George praised the courageous efforts of the health workers involved in the rescue operation, highlighting their quick thinking and dedication in the face of adversity.
