BSNL Rolls Out Nationwide Network-Level Anti-Spam and Anti-Smishing Protection for Mobile Users

BSNL has launched India’s first nationwide network-level anti-spam and anti-smishing protection system, offering real-time fraud prevention without the need for apps or device changes.

New Delhi: State-run telecom major BSNL has announced the nationwide rollout of its network-level anti-spam and anti-smishing protection system for mobile subscribers. The service requires no app installations or changes in phone settings, offering customers seamless security. Suspicious and phishing URLs embedded in SMS messages will now be detected and blocked at the network level, ensuring fraudulent links never reach BSNL users. Legitimate communications such as OTPs, banking alerts, and government notifications—sent under TRAI’s BPS, DLT, and UCC frameworks—will remain unaffected.

Initially demonstrated at the India Mobile Congress 2024, the solution is now being deployed across BSNL circles in phases. Developed in collaboration with Tanla, a leading India-based cloud communications platform, the system integrates advanced technologies including AI/ML, Natural Language Processing (NLP), reputation intelligence, and link expansion to analyze and score messages in real time.

The solution also integrates with the industry’s Blockchain DLT stack, already adopted by Indian telecom companies to regulate unsolicited commercial messages. Independent validation has confirmed the technology’s over 99% effectiveness against smishing attacks. By leveraging integrations with national digital ecosystems, including major web and messaging platforms, the system can swiftly neutralize emerging phishing campaigns.

BSNL highlighted that the NoSpam solution detects more than 1.5 million fraud attempts daily, while identifying over 35,000 fraudulent links and 60,000 fake WhatsApp and mobile numbers every month. Powered by four proprietary AI/ML engines, NLP, and deep learning models, the protection is automatically available to all BSNL mobile users in active circles—without any manual intervention.
