Dr. Manmohan Singh, a distinguished economist and former Prime Minister of India, passed away at 92, leaving behind a legacy of economic reforms and visionary leadership.

Kochi: Dr. Manmohan Singh, the 13th and 14th Prime Minister of India, has passed away at the age of 92. He was undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi, where he passed away on the evening of December 26 due to age-related ailments.

Dr. Singh was a renowned economist and former professor who became one of India’s most prominent financial experts. Born on September 26, 1932, in the Gah district of present-day Pakistan’s Punjab province, he moved to Amritsar with his family after the partition of India.

An expert in economics, Dr. Singh studied at Punjab University, Cambridge University, and Oxford University. He served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and also represented India in the International Monetary Fund. It was under the persuasion of then-Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao that Dr. Singh entered politics, initially serving as Finance Minister in Rao’s cabinet.

Dr. Manmohan Singh became the Prime Minister of India on May 22, 2004, and was re-elected for a second term in 2009. His tenure saw numerous economic reforms and liberalization measures, including the establishment of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to provide citizens with unique identity cards.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, calling Dr. Singh one of India’s most distinguished leaders and acknowledging his immense contribution to the country’s development. He praised Dr. Singh for his efforts to improve the lives of people and his rise from humble beginnings to becoming a respected economic leader.

Dr. Singh’s passing marks the end of an era, and he is remembered for his visionary leadership in India’s economic reforms.
