Lokanath Behera stresses the importance of sustainable development for survival, citing Kerala’s Water Metro as a model, at the Summit of Future.
Kochi: Lokanath Behera emphasized that sustainable development is essential for survival during his speech at the Summit of Future, organized by Jain University. Behera highlighted the success of the Water Metro project in Kerala, which has been adopted by the central government for implementation in 18 states, including Gujarat. He noted that the Kerala Water Metro transportation system is an example of sustainable mobility. “We are working towards bringing more sustainable facilities to Kochi. All developments related to the Water Metro are sustainable. Our goal should be development centered on welfare and security,” Behera said.
Dr. Shikha Elizabeth, a scientist from India’s Ministry of Earth Sciences, pointed out that while environmental degradation is happening globally, it will have regional impacts as well. “We are witnessing several environmental disasters, including heat waves, droughts, and floods. We live in constant fear every monsoon, unlike ten years ago,” she added. Dr. Krishnan NVH, Advisory Committee Member of Jain University, stated that several companies, including Apple, are working towards carbon neutrality, with Apple declaring its goal to be carbon neutral by 2025.
Shri. Sreedharan Murthy, another Advisory Committee Member of Jain University, emphasized the need for democratizing knowledge and the use of technologies like AI in climate studies.
