Kozhikode: The White School International organised an elaborate Onam celebration conveying the messages of tradition, togetherness and compassion for fellow beings. Students and teachers made this year’s Onam memorable by combining the festivities with a strong sense of social responsibility. The main attraction was a giant 10-metre-diameter ‘vegetable pookkalam’ created by students on the school’s tennis court using vegetables of different colours and shapes instead of flowers. Since the school began celebrating Onam, The White School has followed the exemplary practice of creating its pookkalam using vegetables rather than flowers.
The vegetables used for the mega pookkalam were brought by students from their homes. The initiative promotes the idea of preventing food wastage and ensuring that food reaches those in need. After the pookkalam display, the vegetables will be distributed among school staff members and local residents. Various cultural and artistic programmes by students were also held as part of the celebrations.
Dr. Padma Hariharan, Director of Highlight Educational Initiatives and Head of the School, said that the unique celebration was organised with the objective of nurturing humanitarian values and a sense of social responsibility among students, going beyond academics.
