KATTUPALLI: Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (L&T) delivered ‘Samarthak’, the Indian Navy’s first Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV), on August 27, 2026, at its shipyard in Kattupalli. Boasting over 75 percent indigenous content, the vessel marks another major milestone in India’s domestic shipbuilding capabilities and aligns with the Government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.
Aptly named ‘Samarthak’—meaning ‘The Proponent’—the ship is designed as a dependable enabler across a wide spectrum of maritime activities rather than being restricted to a single role. The vessel was primarily conceived as a versatile trial and evaluation platform. Additionally, it is engineered to carry out maritime surveillance and reconnaissance, offshore patrolling, and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations when required.
The delivery of Samarthak highlights the steady growth of India’s self-sustaining domestic defence industrial ecosystem. By integrating high levels of local manufacturing and advanced multi-mission capabilities, the vessel reinforces the Indian Navy’s commitment to indigenous design and sustainable maritime security.
