Kochi : Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan said that Pandit Karuppan was a unique leader who inspired enthusiasm among all sections of society. He was inaugurating the 142nd birth anniversary celebrations of Pandit K.P. Karuppan, along with the centenary of his tenure as an MLC in the Cochin Legislative Council, and the commemoration of the government’s 1978 recognition of ten sub-groups under the common name “Dheevara.” The event was organized by the Akhila Kerala Dheevara Sabha at the Pandit Karuppan Memorial Hall in Ernakulam. The Chief Minister noted that Pandit Karuppan realized education as the only means for the social and economic upliftment of backward communities and worked tirelessly towards that goal.
He described Pandit Karuppan as a poet, scholar, social reformer, legislator, and a visionary who fought for the socio-economic transformation of marginalized communities. Despite facing caste discrimination during his student days, he led a strong struggle against caste oppression. As a member of the Cochin Legislative Council, he effectively presented the issues faced by backward communities and helped bring them into the mainstream of society. The Chief Minister also remembered that Pandit Karuppan strongly opposed superstitions and brought social changes through his poetry, speeches, and legislative interventions. During the function, Kodikunnil Suresh MP, who has served the longest term in the Lok Sabha, was honored.
He further stated that all welfare schemes, including the kerosene subsidy initiated during the K. Karunakaran government and continued by the A.K. Antony and Oommen Chandy governments, would be sustained by the present government as well. He assured that proper rehabilitation would be ensured for fishermen affected by large-scale projects like the Vizhinjam Port, and benefits would also be extended to inland fishermen.

The function was presided over by Dheevara Sabha President M.V. Varijakshan and attended by Fisheries Minister Adv. Abdul Gafoor, Hibi Eden MP, MLAs Rajeev Chandrasekhar and T.J. Vinod, Kochi Corporation Mayor Adv. V.K. Mini Mol, Dheevara Sabha General Secretary and former MLA V. Dinakaran, State Secretaries K.K. Thampi, P.M. Sugathan, P. Govindan, State Treasurer P.V. Janardhanan, and several other leaders.
