Kochi: Inspired by the devastating 2018 floods in Chalakudy, 17-year-old Navain Shibu from Thrissur has developed AI technology for dam management. He designed an AI-based edge network integrated with VHF radio communication—termed ‘AcoustiNode Systems’—capable of accurately analyzing water levels to enable timely water releases and avoid unnecessary discharges during critical conditions.
This innovation earned Navain a spot among the Top 40 candidates in Samsung Solve for Tomorrow, a leading national CSR initiative. The technology holds immense potential to enhance irrigation safety, optimize hydroelectric power generation, and minimize economic losses caused by flooding.
Navain’s success demonstrates how local experiences and insights from small towns can yield solutions to massive crises. This young prodigy serves as a reminder that true innovations emerge not just in high-end laboratories, but from personal memories paired with resolute determination.
