Apollo Adlux Hospital Successfully Performs Its First Robotic Kidney Transplant

Launches State-of-the-Art Robotic Kidney Transplant Unit in Angamaly

Angamaly:Marking a monumental milestone in its advanced surgical capabilities, Apollo Adlux Hospital, Angamaly, has successfully executed its first robotic kidney transplant surgery. Coinciding with this clinical achievement, the hospital officially commissioned its specialized ‘Robotic Kidney Transplant Unit’ within the Center of Excellence in Renal Sciences. Led by Dr. Roy P. John, Senior Consultant and Head of Urology and Kidney Transplantation, the complex procedure was executed by a multidisciplinary team including Nephrology Senior Consultants Dr. Jojo Pullokkara and Dr. Manju Kamal, Consultant Jeena J. Sathyan, Senior Urology Consultant Dr. Biju Sukumaran Pillai, and Senior Anesthesiology Consultants Dr. Dinith Joy and Dr. Prashanth. Both the organ donor and recipient have recovered smoothly and are progressing well post-surgery.

Unlike conventional open transplants that require large abdominal incisions, the robotic procedure utilized high-definition 3D visualization and flexible robotic instrumentation inserted through keyhole ports. This technology completely eliminated natural hand tremors, enabling surgeons to precisely suture delicate blood vessels and ureters while preserving surrounding healthy tissues. Highlighting the benefits, Dr. Roy P. John noted that robotic transplantation minimizes surgical trauma, reduces blood loss and infection risks, lowers post-operative pain, and facilitates significantly faster recovery times, particularly for patients with complex body anatomies or co-existing health conditions.

Apollo Adlux Hospital CEO Dr. Abel George stated that integrating robotic precision into organ transplantation aligns with the hospital’s commitment to delivering international standards of healthcare to patients across Kerala and neighboring states. Dr. Dilshad, Chief Operating Officer and Anesthesiologist, added that accessibility to robotic kidney transplants remains limited to select medical centers, making this launch a major leap forward for regional nephrology care. The press conference announcing the launch was also attended by Medical Services Director Dr. R.Ramesh Kumar , alongside other senior clinical department heads.
