Kochi: Demonstrating its operational readiness, resilience and unwavering commitment to saving lives at sea, the Indian Coast Guard successfully evacuated an injured mariner from a merchant vessel approximately 87 nautical miles off Kochi.
The Maritime Rescue Sub Centre, Kochi (MRSC(K)), coordinated the medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) operation following a request for assistance from the Denmark-flagged merchant vessel Cornelia Maersk. The vessel was carrying a Filipino mariner who had sustained second-degree burns and required urgent medical attention.
An ALH MK-III helicopter of 845 Squadron (CG), Coast Guard Air Enclave, Kochi, supported by ICGS Arnvesh, was tasked with the mission. The helicopter crew undertook the challenging evacuation at sea and successfully winched the injured mariner from the merchant vessel.
The mission assumes particular significance as the ALH MK-III fleet has resumed operational flying after a prolonged grounding. The successful execution of the MEDEVAC highlights the Indian Coast Guard’s operational preparedness, professional competence and ability to respond swiftly to emergencies in the maritime domain.
The evacuated mariner was subsequently brought ashore for further medical treatment.The Indian Coast Guard remains ready, responsive and resolute in safeguarding lives at sea and extending assistance to mariners in distress, irrespective of nationality.
