KOCHI: Marking a major milestone in indigenous naval defense manufacturing, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, delivered ‘Amini’, an Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), to the Indian Navy on November 05, 2026. Designed and built in accordance with the Classification Rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), the vessel is among the largest Indian Naval warships propelled by waterjets.
Equipped with state-of-the-art lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers, and advanced sonars, ‘Amini’ is engineered for effective detection and engagement of underwater threats, significantly enhancing the Navy’s anti-submarine, coastal surveillance, and mine-laying capabilities. Named after Amini Island in Lakshadweep, the ship resurrects the legacy of the erstwhile INS Amini, a Petya III Class corvette decommissioned in 2002. Boasting over 80 percent indigenous content, the induction reinforces India’s commitment to self-reliance under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision and highlights the strength of the domestic defense ecosystem.
